Members of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard are eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve.

To qualify, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985. If you are an officer, you must have agreed to serve six years in addition to your original obligation. For some types of training it is necessary to have a six-year commitment that begins after Sept. 30, 1990.
  • Complete your initial active duty for training (IADT).
  • Meet the requirement to receive a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before completing IADT. You may not use 12 hours toward a college degree to meet this requirement.
  • Remain in good standing while serving in an active Selected Reserve unit. You will also retain MGIB-SR eligibility if you were discharged from Selected Reserve service due to a disability that was not caused by misconduct. Your eligibility period may be extended if you are ordered to active duty.

Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) is a program that provides low-cost term life insurance coverage to eligible Servicemembers. If eligible, you are automatically issued the maximum SGLI coverage. If you qualify for SGLI, you are automatically enrolled and do not need to apply for coverage.

You are automatically insured under full-time SGLI if you are one of the following:

  • Active duty member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard
  • Commissioned member of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) or the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS)
  • Cadet or midshipman of the U.S. military academies
  • Member, cadet, or midshipman of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) engaged in authorized training and practice cruises
  • Member of the Ready Reserve or National Guard and are scheduled to perform at least 12 periods of inactive training per year
  • Servicemember who volunteers for a mobilization category in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR)

Members of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard are eligible for the Pennsylvania Education Assistance Program.

Qualifications include:

  • Must have a six-year service agreement and sign an EAP Fm 1 prior to submitting an application. These documents should have the same date.
  • Be a graduate of Basic Training, advanced camp or the equivalent prior to submitting an application.
  • Be an active satisfactory participant in a PA Air National Guard.
  • All ranks are eligible.
  • Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Scholarship through the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) recipients are eligible.
  • Be a resident of Pennsylvania prior to submitting an application.  (EAP Fm2)
  • Be an eligible member of PA National Guard prior to the 1st day of class.
  • Be enrolled as a part or full-time student in an educational institution that is in Pennsylvania and approved by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).  PHEAA's criteria is:  Schools that are approved for Title IV Student loans are approved for EAP.  There are over 500 approved schools.
  • Be enrolled in a Degree and/or Certificate Achieving Course of Study.
  • Master's Degree students can be funded on a part-time basis only.
The Pennsylvania Air National Guard and the 193rd Special Operations Wing offer scholarships to members.  These scholarships are awarded annually to eligible recipients who apply and are selected by the scholarship board or chair.
