The United States Air Force Band is now accepting applications and audio recordings for the 2011 Colonel George S. Howard Young Artist Competition. This year's competition is for woodwind instrumentalists in grades 9-12. The 2012 competition will be open to brass and percussion players. Applicants from all over the country submit recordings playing a specified selection for their instrument. Finalists are then invited to a live audition in Washington, D.C., to perform for the competition committee in January 2011. The winner will be flown to Washington, D.C., with one chaperone to perform with The U.S. Air Force Concert Band in February or March 2011.

Previous winners in the 16-year history of the competition have hailed from all over the United States. Many of these young artists have gone on to successful careers in instrumental music.

Last year's winner, Alison Miserendino, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of North Texas. Last February, she performed as a soloist with the Concert Band in the Band's annual Guest Artist Series.

The competition is named for Colonel George S. Howard, who was the commander and conductor of The United States Air Force Band between 1944 and 1963.
