Recollections - November 2010 Photo Revealed

We have so many wonderful photographs, recordings and programs in our archives. Occasionally, I stumble across a stack of items that need to be archived. They are usually duplicates or items that were removed by someone and need to be put in their proper place. Often, this is how I choose photographs for the Recollections feature of the Cadenza.

I stumbled across the photograph featured in November (photograph 38) one afternoon as I was sorting old pictures. It seemed particularly appropriate since it featured two armed services, the United States Air Force and the United States Marine Corps, working together. Last month, Bolling Air Force Base became Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and we will often find ourselves working closely with members of them and our other sister services.

Several of you had information to share and I appreciate your emails. As always, I appreciate hearing from you. This month, I will share what is printed on the back of the picture:

Lieutenant Colonel Arnald D. Gabriel, Director of The United States Air Force Band, guest conducts the Marine Band during the annual memorial services for John Philip Sousa at Mr. Sousa's gravesite in Congressional Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

This tribute by the Marine Band is held each year on November the 6th, Mr. Sousa's birthday. John Philip Sousa was the Director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Sousa, the most prolific composer of marches the world has ever known, has been immortalized by such stirring compositions as "The Washington Post, " "Stars and Stripes Forever," "The Thunderer" and "Semper Fidelis," the official march of the United States Marine Corps.
