This is the fifth WAMMIE awarded to the Airmen of Note in recognition of their continuing popularity and dedicated service to the Air Force, and to the diverse jazz fans across the metropolitan DC area. WAMA is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization of music industry professionals committed to raising the profile of the region's diverse music community. WAMA's main goal is to promote Washington area music and to achieve national recognition of the region as an important center for live and recorded music. Just as the nation's Capital is comprised of a rich cross section of cultures, WAMA's membership embraces all musical styles from classical, bluegrass, go-go, R&B and reggae, to rock, jazz and folk. WAMA sponsors the Washington Area Music Awards which recognizes significant career achievements by area musicians by giving WAMMIES. Nominations and balloting come from the WAMA membership. Previously the Airmen of Note won this award in 1986, 1991, 1992 and 2009. The 25th Annual WAMMIES was held in February 2011 in honor of all 2010 WAMMIE Award winners.
