Leckie Elementary School Invites JBAB Members To Career Day Airmen, Sailors and civilians came out in droves May 1 to speak to children ages 3-11 at Leckie Elementary School in Washington, D.C. about their jobs. In the same vein, presenters also encouraged the children to study hard, develop their talents and pursue their passions.

Volunteers included musicians from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force Bands; guardsmen from the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard; police; firefighters; secret service agents; and many others.

The day began early with volunteers being treated to a light continental breakfast before being assigned to classrooms where they remained until the end of the event. Classes of children from pre-kindergarten-5th grade visited classrooms for 15- to 20-minute sessions with each presenter representing a different career field.

The event wrapped up with presenters convening in the school library, where they were offered a light lunch and an opportunity to visit with each other as well as school staff.

"The volunteers who came out to see these kids are showing them that the words, 'You can be anything you want to be when you grow up,' are not just empty, meaningless or clichéd words, they are real. They are true," said Sgt. Ana Tarango, Naval District Washington police officer stationed at JBAB. "The presenters are doing a great service for these children by volunteering for this event."
