2012 Jazz Heritage Series in full swing! Published Nov. 2, 2012 By Master Sgt. Jeff Martin Joint Base Anacostia Bolling, D.C. -- The 2012 Jazz Heritage Series is in full swing, as the Airmen of Note hosted vocal sensation Roberta Gambarini on October 12 and world-class trombonist Andy Martin on October 26. Gambarini started her career in her native Torino, Italy before moving to Milan for radio and television, and finally to the United States in 1998 to attend the New England Conservatory. Since then, she has received numerous awards culminating in two GRAMMY nominations in the Jazz Vocal category. A brilliant musician, Gambarini wowed the audience with her rendition of "On the Sunny Side of the Street," singing famous solos by Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as dazzling arrangements by Slide Hampton and "Note" arranger Master Sgt. Alan Baylock. Andy Martin is well known not only for his amazing jazz trombone playing, but being a first-call recording artist in Los Angeles. He's contributed to albums for Coldplay, Michael Buble and Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, among many others. He can be heard playing lead trombone on "Dancing with the Stars," as well as on over 150 motion pictures and numerous TV shows. Martin's virtuosity was out in full force on "Carl," a tribute to trombonist Carl Fontana, Baylock's arrangement of "We'll Be Together Again." His final tour de force, "Caravan," brought the crowd to its feet. It was truly a memorable evening for the concert host, Air Force District of Washington commander Maj. Gen. Sharon K.G. Dunbar, as well as all in attendance. In case you missed the first two concerts, the Airmen of Note will be performing with the electrifying vibraphonist Joe Locke on Friday, November 9 at 8 p.m. Concerts are at The George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium and are open and free to the public. Please join us for an outstanding night of music!
