Airmen of Note Kick Off Jazz Heritage Series on February 8th

The Airmen of Note is rehearsing in preparation for their much-anticipated 19th annual Jazz Heritage Series, which runs from February through April. The Jazz Heritage Series showcases preeminent jazz musicians from the U.S. and abroad performing live with the Airmen of Note. In addition to the dozens of luminaries featured over the years, the subsequent radio broadcasts of the concerts serve as a record of the band’s more recent incarnations.

The 2018 Jazz Heritage series opens on Thursday, February 8th with vocal sensation Cyrille Aimée. Lauded by the New York Times as a “rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers,” she has won both the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition.  An actor and music educator, her supple voice and immense talent have stunned audiences the world over. Her performance with the Airmen of Note should be no exception.

 

Thursday, March 8th brings a living legend to the Washington, D.C. area with the arrival of Mr. Kenny Barron. The pianist is known internationally for his legacy and innovation, traits that are sure to shine alongside the Airmen of Note. Barron was named a 2010 Jazz Master by The National Endowment for the Arts. The Los Angeles Times named him “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” and Jazz Weekly calls him “[t]he most lyrical piano player of our time.” Barron has performed with a who’s-who of jazz music to include Philly Joe Jones, Lee Morgan, Dizzy Gillespie, and Buddy Rich. This is not a concert to be missed.

 

The final concert of the 2018 Jazz Heritage Series will be on Thursday, April 5th. This surprise final artist will be posted to the USAF Band calendar shortly with details to follow.

Since 1990, the Airmen of Note's Jazz Heritage Series has served as a benchmark of excellence in the world of jazz and military bands. For the thousands of people in attendance at the concerts this spring and the millions more reached by their subsequent radio broadcasts, the 2018 Jazz Heritage Series is looking to be a truly remarkable experience.
