Staff Sergeant Brett Kirby

Staff Sergeant Brett Kirby is a native of Forest, Virginia. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from George Mason University and his Master of Music Education from Boston University. Sergeant Kirby has studied with Dale Underwood of the United States Navy Band and Jim Carroll of the Woody Herman Orchestra. He performed for the 24th and 25th International Saxophone Symposiums and has shared the stage with Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, The Allman Brothers Band, Duffy Jackson, Denis DiBlasio, Byron Stripling, Ron Carter, Ed Soph, Steve Lippia, and Joe Sullivan. Airman Kirby has also performed with the Mclean Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Wind Symphony, the Virginia Grand Military Band, Los Gatos, The Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, Take Note, Funk 45, Swing Shift, as a guest soloist with various collegiate ensembles. Prior to joining the Air Force, he held various educator positions at several universities as well as public and private schools.

Most recently, Sergeant Kirby served on the music faculty at James Madison University, teaching jazz improvisation, woodwind techniques, and jazz combos. He also directed bands at Thomas Harrison Middle School and Jazz Ensemble Director at Harrisonburg High School. Other past teaching positions include saxophone and clarinet instructor at Bridgewater College (VA), Music Director and Fine Arts Department Head at Stuart Hall School, Elementary, and Secondary Music Education for Fairfax County Public Schools (VA), Director of the Jazz Department at the Durham School of the Arts (NC). Airman Kirby joined the United States Air Force Academy Band in July 2016 and currently performs with the Concert Band, Marching Band, and the Falconaires Jazz Ensemble.
