Senior Master Sergeant William D. Swanberg William D. Swanberg is the Superintendent of the566th Air Force Band attached to the 182nd Airlift Wing in Peoria, IL. Sergeant Swanberg continues a proud line of family military service, serving after his father and numerous cousins. On July 26, 1980, Sergeant Swanberg enlisted in the 113th Army Band at Fort Knox. During his time at Basic Training at Fort Knox, Sergeant Swanberg shot expert Level for his M-16 Rifle Marksmanship qualification. Later in 1981, Sergeant Swanberg transferred to the 144th Army National Guard Band in Springfield, IL. Serving in the Army National Guard Band for two years until in 1982, Sergeant Swanberg enlisted to the Air National Guard and was stationed with the 531st Air Force Band at Hensley Field in Grand Prairie, TX in the Dallas area. In 1985, Sergeant Swanberg transferred to the 566th Air Force Band at O'Hare Airport. When the unit relocated from Chicago to Peoria in 1999, Sergeant Swanberg moved with the unit to its current location at the 182nd Airlift Wing. During his time with the 566th Air Force Band, Sergeant Swanberg served as NCOIC of the Ceremonial Band, NCOIC of Operations, NCOIC of Administration, and Resource Advisor. On December 17, 2008, Sergeant was proud of be promoted to the rank of First Sergeant for the 566th Air Force Band, a position he held until May 2012. In 2011 he was awarded the First Sergeant of the Year for the Illinois Air National Guard. He also served as president of the First Sergeant Council for the 182nd Airlift Wing. In May 2012, Sergeant Swanberg was promoted to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, and assumed the duties of Superintendent of the 566th Air Force Band, a position he holds proudly to this day. While serving with the 566th Air Force Band, Sergeant Swanberg has performed for five Illinois Governors, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Queen of Denmark, the Emir of Qatar, the Speaker of the House, and the President of the United States. In 2007, Sergeant Swanberg volunteered to be a part the CENTAF Band located in Southwest Asia, traveling to bases and villages in nine countries including Djibouti, Africa, Iraq, and Afghanistan. In 2010, Sergeant Swanberg again volunteered for overseas duty, this time leaving the Band environment for the first time. MSgt Swanberg was appointed Group First Sergeant of the 506th AEG, Kirkuk, Iraq, where his firm leadership forged more than 900 Airmen from the Active Duty, Reserve and Guard components into one cohesive combat team. In May 2012, SMSgt Swanberg deployed as NCOIC of the AFCENT Band, "Vector," performing in locations in Afghanistan, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Egypt. Hometown: Frankfort, IL
