Senior Master Sergeant Nathan R. Heald is the Senior Enlisted Leader of the United States Air Force Heartland of America Band, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. He serves as the principal enlisted advisor for a 15-member geographically separated operating location assigned to the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. In this capacity, he advises leadership on enlisted force utilization, operational readiness, professional development, standards, and morale, while synchronizing base-level installation support requirements with the 55th Wing. His leadership ensures personnel remain trained, equipped, and prepared to execute military ceremonies, strategic communication missions, and civic outreach across their area of responsibility.
Sergeant Heald’s military career began at Lackland Air Force Base in June 2009 as a Basic Trainee at Basic Military Training. His operational background spans senior enlisted leadership, headquarters staff integration, and special duty assignments across multiple Major Commands. Prior to his current assignment, he was selected via By-Name Request (BNR) to serve as the Enlisted Executive to the Chief of Staff, Headquarters United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa (HQ USAFE-AFAFRICA), Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Preceding his staff tenure, he served as Section Chief of Readiness for the USAFE-AFAFRICA Band, orchestrating full-spectrum readiness across six functional sections and 10 performance teams supporting operations in 22 nations across Europe and Africa.
Throughout his career, Sergeant Heald has demonstrated sustained musical and operational excellence across key regional and overseas band assignments. While assigned to the USAF Heartland of America Band at Offutt AFB and the USAFE Band at Ramstein AB, he served as Music Director and Tour Manager for several music performance teams, directing international cultural diplomacy missions and high-impact civic engagements. At the USAF Band of the Golden West, Travis AFB, California, he served as NCOIC and Tour Director for the Ceremonial Band. His tenure culminated in the production of an unprecedented, nationally broadcast halftime show on ESPN’s Monday Night Football for the San Francisco 49ers. The groundbreaking performance debuted a first-of-its-kind hybrid on-stage rock band and marching band and a cinematic cold open filmed by the production crew behind the iconic opening of The Sopranos, was viewed live by 12 million ESPN viewers, and was amplified globally through live streaming and real-time social media coverage by Imagine Dragons on their official platforms.
Sergeant Heald's diverse career also includes serving as Squadron Superintendent for the USAF Band of the West at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, where he directed administrative, financial, and readiness support for 61 personnel across 13 performance teams executing 350 annual missions. Additionally, he completed an extended special duty tour within the 737th Training Group during the COVID-19 pandemic as a Military Training Instructor at the 321st Training Squadron and Noncommissioned Officer of Drill and Ceremonies at he 433rd Training Squadron. During this critical period, he earned the Military Training Instructor School’s Excellence in Instruction Award, graduated 10 Basic Military Training flights, and served as the Lead Drum and Bugle Corps Instructor—successfully resurrecting and reforging live ceremonial performances for the Air Force’s historic Basic Military Training Drum and Bugle Corps after operations had been shuttered due to pandemic restrictions.
