Technical Sergeant James Layfield

Technical Sgt. James Layfield is the Principal Trombonist with the Concert Band, The United States Air Force Band, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C. Originally from McKinney, Texas he began his Air Force career in 2016.

Layfield attended the University of Texas at Arlington, Southern Methodist University and the University of Michigan receiving three degrees in music. He has performed with the Dallas Symphony, Shreveport Symphony, and Lansing Symphony, as well as many other symphonies throughout his career. His principal teachers include Dennis Bubert, John Kitzman, and David Jackson.

Layfield was the member of two different Eastern Trombone Workshop Quartet competition winning groups in 2008 with the Southern Methodist University Trombone Quartet and in 2011 with the Euphoria Trombone Quartet. He most recently was the Assistant Professor of Low Brass at the University of Louisiana at Monroe before joining the Concert Band.
