A1C Joshua Silva is a native of Fresno, California. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Master of Music degree from the University of Oregon. He received full tuition scholarships for both degrees as well as a salaried position for his Master's degree after being awarded an assistantship. His mentors include Mario Guarneri, Brian McWhorter, Raymond Mase, and Jeff Biancalana.
Prior to joining the Air Force Academy Band, Joshua was an active musician in the Pacific Northwest. He served as Associate Principal Trumpet with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra in Eugene, Oregon, as well as the Oregon Mozart Players, the Portland-Columbia Symphony, the Portland Chamber Orchestra, The Oregon Symphony, the Portland Opera Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. In the summers, Joshua has held positions at BASOTI (Bay Area Summer Opera Theatre), The Aspen Music Festival, The Astoria Music Festival, and the world renowned Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra. Besides being an orchestral musician, Joshua's performing career also gravitates toward contemporary classical music. He has recorded with the ensemble Beta Collide on Cantaloupe records, showcasing the music of David Lang.
In addition to his performance experience, Joshua has studied both conducting and composition.
