The Air Force Band's newest group performed at the Air Force Memorial's open house event here in a Pentagon parking lot.

Max Impact, which performs contemporary music from today's hip-hop, pop and urban sounds, entertained the crowd with hits from artists such as U2, Natasha Bedingfield, Usher and Gwen Stefani.

"We're not playing music you'd expect from an Air Force band," said singer Master Sgt. Ryan Carson to the crowd. "Our mission is to entertain the brave young men and women who are fighting for the freedom we enjoy today."

The crowd, composed mostly of veterans and their families, clapped their hands and nodded their heads to the beat. For some attendees, it was a chance for them to experience the type of entertainment their family members would have while deployed.

"I know all these songs, and they are performing them very well" said Angela Woodbury, whose husband, Master. Sgt. Brian Woodbury, is a first sergeant at Andrews Air Force Base. She attended the event with friends and family. She said her husband has attended similar concerts while overseas.

"He always said seeing these bands perform was a nice distraction over there," she said. "So it's great to be able to see them for myself."
