Washington, D.C. -- This December, the Concert Band releases its newest album, Breaking Barriers. The recording pays tribute to the courageous men and women who have refined the Air Force’s mission to fly, fight, and win, ensuring the contributions of Airpower endure long into the future. Breaking Barriers is a celebration, felt in the heroic strains of Master Sgt. John Bliss’ original title track, in the unrelenting drive of Michael Markowski’s “joyRiDE,” and in the triumphant fanfares of retired Senior Master Sgt. Robert Thurston’s piece “The Long, Delirious, Burning Blue.”
It’s also an exploration, with six new works for band, three of which highlight the remarkable skill of the professional Airmen musicians in the Air Force Band: “Spacious Skies” by Bruce Broughton, a delightful homage to the Air Force’s primary domain, featuring the saxophone section; “Falcons in Flight” by Technical Sgt. Tadd Russo, a duet for trumpet and euphonium; and a special online-only bonus, “In Pursuit,” from Master Sgt. Kent Baker, for oboe and band.
Our exploration continues with John Mackey’s “Liminal,” commissioned by the Band to show the Air Force “standing on the threshold” between our celebrated heritage and exciting horizons, including the Air Force’s expanding space mission, musically depicted by Frank Ticheli’s modern classic “Symphony No. 2,” harkening to the celestial light of the stars, moon and sun.
Breaking Barriers also honors the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, undeniably among the most talented, successful composers, conductors and educators in our nation’s history. The suite from his musical On The Town and the rollicking “Prelude, Fugue and Riffs” are classic examples of why Bernstein and his music remain true American treasures.
In another display of innovation and teamwork, Colonel Lang invited Mr. Dennis Fisher to produce the album. Mr. Fisher is the Conductor of the Symphonic Band, Associate Director of Wind Studies at the University of North Texas, and Professor of Music in Conducting and Ensembles. His expertise was invaluable in the recording booth, helping to perfect an already magical culmination of artistry and talent.
American Airmen have been Breaking Barriers since 1947. Through innovation, teamwork and love of country, the United States Air Force will continue Breaking Barriers for the next 70 years and beyond! Celebrate with us as we honor our past and embrace our future.
